What the Redwoods Told Me

Heart to Heart and Mind to Mind

KTHT 15-Day Writing Challenge — day 7

In September of 1990, near the base of Mt. Tamalpais in Mill Valley, California, we got a break from our church retreat. I hiked a trail up the mountain to a fire road. Along the road was a small green meadow bounded by a cluster of Redwood Trees. I was drawn to them.

I faced one tree and put my hands on the bark. In my mind, I asked: “What are you here for?”

I broke contact with the tree when I heard laughter. I assumed, incorrectly, that the gaggle of people was laughing at me. They seemed to be laughing amongst themselves.

In June of 1991, I was hiking at Jack London State Park to London Lake, a pond/swimming hole in my estimation. I felt a pull by a group of Redwoods off the path. As soon as I put my hands on one of the trees, the Redwoods answered my question from 9 months earlier to the day on Mt. Tamalpais from 50 miles away.

They said: “We hold up the sky.”
A tear rolled down my cheek. I felt at one with the Redwoods.

This is from an excerpt from an upcoming book — a memoir on how I became a healer. It has a few more Redwood stories.
