Design for change

UX design has long hidden behind the vail of UI… We often see imagery separating the two, and we as product designers, UX practitioners, UI designers, Visual Designers… (you get the point) are continually pushing for accuracy. Yet, we allow for workflows that enable visual design as the key element of the UX design process.

I often hear developers talk about UX.. the mythical concept that an experience is derived from a visual element or from an interaction that is a derivative of the code that is being implemented.

Empowerment, the concept that we take actions to enable or push other forward. I see this as a prime opportunity that should be captured and turned into a way to help users and promote empathy. When looking into the development process there are many processes and many emerging processes. UX as an industry is grasping to standardize and prove worth for our development counterpart.

By starting with small items like our urge in design to correct the vocabulary used to design the visual element of software, and not by changing the words. By empowering through knowledge of what user experience is, the process it takes and how it can impact the development process we are able to start to evoke some of the changes we as an industry are looking for. It sounds simple, and it is… Taking little baby steps and ensuring that all teams we interact with on a daily basis understand that there needs to be a voice for users, it needs to be reflected visually and with strategy for not only blueprints and user flows, but in product decisions, we will begin impacting the perception of ROI with UX in business.

The largest gain for UX is financial gain in the context of reduced iterations, smaller MVP projects that are technically more sounds foundations to build upon, as well as improved user flows and retention rates. When looking into mobile UX is the turning point of a product (app, game, store) to improve usability and increase return visits and continued usage of the the application. Increasing user satisfaction has a direct conversion toward finical gain.
