How to find the best online courses on Finance?

An Investment in knowledge pays the best interest

The world has shifted to online platforms to enhance their knowledge and continue the process of learning. Many students and professionals are looking for courses online that can give them an edge over their colleagues in this world of the rat race.

But sometimes a question arises “Are these courses really beneficial?”, “Will they give me that promotion?”, “Will this certificate impress the interviewers?”.

The answer to these questions will be “it depends”. It depends on where you learn from, it depends on who teaches you, it depends if the courses are carved out for your profession, it depends on how you will practically implement the knowledge gained.

1. Look for how many years or months back were these classes recorded. If the classes are recorded over 2 years without being updated then it does not hold good. With new technology and inventions taking place every month any information that is stale does not hold any value. It might look good on your CV but would not be of any use in the practical world.

2. Research about the professionals that are teaching these courses. Some courses although are designed by professionals are not taught by them. This leads to having poor subject knowledge and a waste of useful resources like Time, Money, and Energy.

3. Check the content of the course to see what you will learn. If the syllabus is not helpful to you in any manner then do not buy the course.

4. Weigh the pros and cons of two or more courses from the same or different websites. See which one is more beneficial to you according to your need and from which will you learn the most.

5. Lastly, always choose a reputed company’s course. It is not only about the name but also the reputation they carry hence they have to make sure that their course is of quality.

I realized the above when I happened to search for courses online myself. I am a Post Graduate Student, who is always looking for ways to learn and improve my subject knowledge.

Due to the current lockdown situation, I decided to enhance my skills online in Finance. I wanted the edge over my classmates when I would be sitting for placements. While searching for online courses in Finance I faced way too many problems (almost all the ones I listed above).

I was becoming increasingly agitated since I was unable to find the right certification course I required to upskill. But to my surprise after a lot to research and spending hours on my laptop googling I stumbled across this:

EY CAFTA (Certificate in Applied Finance, Treasury and Analytics)

It is an online certification course in Finance, Treasury, and Analytics called CAFTA (Certification in Applied Finance, Treasury and Analytics) by EY (Ernst and Young).

This course focuses on 7 essential areas cash and liquidity management, supply chain finance and trade finance, investment management, corporate finance, financial risk management, treasury analytics, and treasury structures. Something I was really interested in learning.

I have learned finance throughout my life but treasury was a topic that was not focused on much in the curriculum and I realized how important it was to have knowledge about this as well.

On doing some research on how would my knowledge in treasury be used I realized I had a wider number of opportunities. I could work with NBFC’s and Banks, Corporate, Insurance Companies, AMC, and mutual funds, as a Management consultant, Fintech companies, Credit Rating Agencies, and Brokerage Firms.

Finance knowledge would also help me get a job in these companies but having knowledge in the treasury gives me the edge I need.

Also, the course is taught by highly knowledgeable and experienced professionals holding degrees such as CA, CF, FRM, and MBA.

I would be getting 14 handbooks which would be curated by EY professionals and I would be a part of workshops where other participants would also be present.

There would be group discussions and case studies being analyzed. This would help me learn so much from everyone’s experience and also build my network with people in the same profession as I am. (This attracted me to it the most, as no other certification courses were giving such an opportunity).

EY has a reputation that speaks for itself. A certification course provided by a company with such a reputation would be an asset to my resume. I also read testimonials of students from various colleges around India speaking positively about this course. I am keen on taking it up and seeing it for myself.
