My Most Recent Challenging Learning Experience

My most recent challenging learning experience was during the second week of the Andela pre-boot camp workshop. We were supposed to write endpoints for our SendIT product. We were required to use Flask a microframework for Python which was very new to me. Apart from the home study curriculum, I had never used Flask/python before.

The drill was to first install Linux. I installed it on a Thursday, a day before the deadline of our first challenge. Unfortunately, on Saturday, I installed some dependencies and on booting, the whole system- windows and Linux crashed. My laptop could not boot and kept giving me this error, “Invalid Partition Table”. To make matters worse, there was a blackout at my place for the whole of Sunday and for the better part of Monday. This meant that I could not communicate with my teammates or anyone for that matter. Which led to me not knowing that the workshop venue had changed and I ended up in the wrong place. Eventually, I got to the right venue but the workshop had already started. I was clueless the entire time.

So on Tuesday, I arrived at the workshop earlier than usual. A colleague lent me their flash drive and after two failed attempts, I finally installed Ubuntu. I was very tense at this time because most of the others had made progress and I had not even started. I didn’t even know where to begin. At some point, I even felt sick and I had to go out and get some fresh air for some time.

Luckily for me, I had the best of teammates. We were left behind after the workshop to work on the challenge. Nothing worked for me though. I was already feeling sick so when I got home I went straight to bed, frustrated and disappointed. It was three days to the deadline and I had done nothing yet.

Come Wednesday, I woke up very early and tried to comprehend the entirety of the challenge. I did make some progress. I made an effort to arrive at the workshop early. I was in good luck because one of my teammates who had made much progress in the challenge had already arrived. I explained to him my predicaments and he led me, or rather us, through the logic behind creating endpoints. My spirits came back and on getting home, I worked on the five mandatory endpoints and added two more.

Come Thursday, I was clueless about writing tests. Our group members helped us out and by the end of Thursday, I was able to do much of everything. I wrote the tests on Thursday night and tested them and they all worked!! The sick feeling I had before went away and once more I was rejuvenated.

Big ups to my teammates who helped me overcome challenge two, Kibet, Victor, Patrick and James and anyone I may have forgotten to mention.
