EKU Alumnus Inspires Students

Vince Coakley visited the EKU Center for the Arts as the Black History Month’s Keynote speaker “Making Your Career in the Digital Age.”

Eastern Kentucky University invited a successful African American radio host to share his experience and advice in celebration of Black History Month. On February 22nd EKU alumnus, Vince Coakley, spoke of his time since graduating in 1991 with a BA in Broadcasting. Coakley now hosts “The Vince Coakley Radio Program” in North Carolina for 106.3 WORD.

Before the event, Vince was able to sit down with students and faculty for a meet and greet. During this time Coakley reflected on his time at EKU fondly. When asked by students his advice he would give to someone that wants a career in Broadcasting Vince replied “Experience is the number one thing you need. Get out there, just the degree isn’t going to cut it.” Coakley spoke of his time working at 88.9 WEKU on Eastern’s campus. Coakley also encouraged students “Don’t be scared of something cause you might not make money, if you work hard thing’s will rule in your favor.”

Coakley provided students and faculty plenty of advice in his speach. He spoke of what has made him successful and what he feels is necessary to “make your career in the digital age.” Some of these things include making yourself profitable and allowing yourself to be teachable. “Learning does not end with a degree” was some of his wise words. He also mentioned the idea of ownership. He encouraged students when they are looking for a career to think “What sort of business do I want to own?”

Coakley also shared with students the hardships he shared along the way and how they’ve affected him. Coakley hated school and dealt with ADHD, in fact at one point he even dropped out. However he persisted “You never know where your journey will take you…sometimes there are detours.” He ended up at Eastern Kentucky University pursuing a degree in broadcasting and graduating in 1991.

Vince’s success won him the title of Distinguished Alumni by the Department of Communication in 2005. He ended the night answering questions from students and staff, where he gave advice like “Continue to learn, continue to sharpen your skills, because that will prepare you for the future.”
