National Walkout Divides America

To start off, The Guardian is a news source that is biased towards the Democratic Party. The word “spectacular” is used in the headline to describe the walkout which shows the Party’s support towards the students involved in the event. It also describes the walkout as an “expression of mourning” and a “demand for action” which makes the audience see the event as a good thing and a step in the right direction for the country. It also states that the young gun control activists are advocating for “a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and the introduction of universal background checks” and that they are opposing “the additional fortification of schools with fences and armed guards, policies endorsed by the NRA, America’s powerful gun lobby group.” The Guardian chose to use these specific words and ideas because they support Democratic views. The article also provides many quotes from Marjory Stoneman Douglas students who survived the shooting which gives the reader insight into the minds of teens who actually went through a horrific event. Statistics about gun violence are also provided to show the intensity of the problem. This builds trust with the audience and makes the audience side with their ideas.

On the other hand, Reason is biased towards the Republican Party. The article starts off by describing the walkout as a “protest” which makes it seem like a negative event and reveals that the Party does not completely support the students. It also says that “increased safety is indeed the paramount goal of modern millennial and Gen Z political activism.” This is the exact opposite of what was said in The Guardian article because it lines up with the views of the Republican Party which is to increase safety and awareness in schools. There were three quotes in this article from students in Manhattan who did not personally experience the shooting a month prior. Reason used these specific quotes to build up their own Party’s argument and make their audience believe that it is correct.

In conclusion, these news sources covered the National Walkout in different ways based in their political biases. They both use their platforms to enforce the beliefs of their political party and make people believe that those beliefs are correct. After reading, I believe that The Guardian’s article provides a better coverage of the event because it includes many quotes and statistics which increases its credibility and gives readers a true understanding of how big of a problem gun violence is. It is important for news sources to share facts and evidence because readers deserve to know all aspects of an event rather than just hearing filtered ideas that support a certain party.
