HOW TO CONVINCE YOUR PARENTS TO STUDY ABROAD

You have made that big decision to study abroad and are enthusiastic about the plans for the future, but there is one small detail that you have ignored: your parents

As it is big decision, it is very natural that your parents may not be sure about the plan. But you can always convince them to study abroad.

Talk to them about the benefits

When you learn a new language, especially English, it improves your potential for successful career, helps you discover a foreign country. Talk to your parents about how valuable the experience is for your job prospect and opportunities when you graduate from a foreign university.

Take them seriously

Sometimes you might think that your parent’s concerns are silly and not worth your attention. But you should understand them and prove your ability to handle conflict by talking to them about what they are worried about. You need show what you are interested in and what they need to say, rather than arguing with them.

Tell them how you can manage things of your own

Talk to someone who has studied abroad

Talk to friends or cousins who have studied abroad and ask them about their experience. Let them also meet your parents and answer their concerns about your safety and also being a foreigner in a foreign country. Your friend’s or cousin’s experience will be prove to be a live example to your family and they can always reach out to them about all the doubts they might have.

Prepare a financial plan on your own

The primary concern of your parents is how your study abroad program is going to be financed. They will be always concerned about the student loan they need to pay for. For this, it is always good that you come up with a financial plan on your own. You can convince them how you can take up a job and contribute to the expenses. But getting a job isn’t enough; you need to save up more money for upcoming expenses. You need to plan how you are able to manage all the expenses and logistics.

Convince them how important it is to study abroad

Explain and convince them why you want to study abroad. Talk to them about your plans and explain in detail how much it means to you to study abroad. As parents, they know what is best for you and all you have to do is show and talk to them what it means to you.
