Need To Sleep? Spend Some Time In Another World First

Everyone has a cure for sleeplessness, mine involves drinking tea and leaving the planet

Everyone has their own way of winding down. As someone who has suffered with insomnia for a long time — I’ve tried almost everything. One the great things about sleep is that everyone has a remedy — usually two. Something their grandparents taught them and something they read online.

Drink milk. Eat lettuce. Turn off your screens. Have a hot bath. Stay off caffeine Some of this works some of the time but most of it doesn’t most of the time. I often end up awake and getting frustrated that I can’t sleep. This in turn leads to more sleeplessness and feeling groggy in the morning.

Recently I have started doing something that does the trick. And it may help some of you.

I walk for 3 miles with a cup of (decaf) tea and my headphones. I listen to an audiobook and I walk. I have a few different routes that lead me through suburban London all tree lined and no cars.

I set off between 8pm and 9pm every evening and depending on the route am back between 10.30pm and 11pm. I won’t lie to you peering into lit up windows and wondering what the family within are like is a big part of the draw.

Perhaps I look a little insane as I clutch my lidded teacup to my chest on the first part of the walk. But that’s only self consciousness talking. There are plenty of strange things in the world and I’m happy to add to them.
