I wanted to call you that evening,
I wanted to let you know
that despite all I have been through
I never hated you for choosing to go.

I wanted to call you that evening
before I departed for good;
and the night before I decided
to move out, I wanted to call you, too.

I wanted to call only to tell you
how the things that mattered the most
are the memories I carry from that summer,
and you — are the star in them all.

I wanted to call and let go of the tears
I was ashamed for the others to see;
I wanted to beg your forgiveness
and hear you yell “don’t” and say sorry to me.

I wanted to call you that evening,
I thought I had the courage to finally tell you the truth
how leaving was hard but even harder
was leaving someplace without you.
