Predicting the New Avengers

B-roll is celebrating the release of Avengers: Endgame with the launch of FANCAST, a new section of our expanding site devoted to all things fandom. Check back here for lists, predictions, analysis and more…

**SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME FOLLOW**

Avengers: Endgame saw the end of an era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There may have been less deaths than expected (including a surprisingly still-alive Steve Rogers) but nonetheless it is unlikely that the same set of heroes will return in the distant future if at all. Tony Stark is gone (and my heart is shattered), as is Natasha Romanoff, Old Man Steve is happily retired and Thor is ready to start new adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy (more on that in our comprehensive Phase 4 prediction). While it’s likely that the Avengers mantle will be left in the rubble of Westchester County for awhile, we can only assume that some day it will return.

I could certainly see a more grounded and earth-bound Avengers 5 (Doom anyone?) in the next several years or possibly a new de-facto team acting as support in the Captain Marvel sequel or when Spider-Man inevitably goes up against the Sinister Six. Regardless, its likely the Avengers will return someday so, when they do, who will be part of that team? Who won’t be? Let the guessing begin:

A big moment in Infinity War was when the late Tony Stark knighted Parker as an official Avenger so it would be kind of a slap in the face if he didn’t join the new team. Plus of course he’d be part of the new team. He’s still only in high school and its clear Tom Holland has a big future in the MCU with a third and even fourth movie likely. He’d also add a bit of needed comic relief to our lineup but probably not as much as our next pair…

Our next pair of insect-themed heroes, its very likely that this pair will receive both a third film to close out their trilogy and likely coveted slots on the new Avengers lineup after Lang’s crucial assistance to the team in Endgame. Believe it or not, these two have already been in the MCU since 2015 but have remained very much in their own part of the world (literally on the other side of the country). It’s time for these two original team-members from the comics to join in the movie lineup.

Finally we have the newly-ordained Queen of Asgard. A fan-favorite since her introduction in Thor: Ragnarok, many have been clamoring for her to have a bigger role in the future of the MCU. A fourth Thor movie is definitely possible now, although why not have her also replace her friend and former King as a part of the Avengers? It would make a lot of sense. We learned in Endgame that the remaining Asgardians have settled in an unspecified location in Europe (probably Norway) so she is more invested in protecting her new home than Thor, only a part-time resident, ever was. There are a lot of interesting dynamics that could arise from this including the possibility of adapting Brian Michael Bendis’ Siege storyline in which Norman Osborn leads an assault against the resettled population of Asgard. With Spider-Man on the new team as well, this would be a perfect crossover for Avengers 5.

This one may raise some eyebrows but T’Challa has an entire country to run. With his allegiance already devoted to Wakanda, it seems unlikely he will join such an America-centric team anytime soon. Sure he’ll show up in future team-up movies but probably not as an officially-sanctioned Avenger. Plus theres so much left to be explored about the world of Wakanda. Did Endgame hint at the possible arrival of Namor? Will we see more geopolitics as his government reaches out to the rest of the world? There’s questions left to be answered and it seems like T’Challa and Ryan Coogler can do that on their own for awhile.

Another new de-facto leader of the MCU along with Danvers and T’Challa, Strange also seems like a character who has enough on his plate that he doesn’t need to deal with a team of heroes. He was very much separate from most of the team in Infinity War and has yet to meet the majority of the people on this list. As Sorcerer Supreme, he sees himself as having a higher-calling to protect Earth than being a member of the Avengers and keeping him separated from the group could allow the creation of an Illuminati. Bruce Banner is still out there isn’t he? That’s something I’d like to see.

I am more hyped about this new crossover team-up than just about anything in the MCU post-Endgame. As said earlier, Valkyrie’s now in charge of New Asgard and there’s really no reason why our favorite bunch of morons need to be tied down to Earth. James Gunn is back in the drivers seat and things are really shaping up for an amazing Volume 3.

So that’s my prediction for the New Avengers. Check back to our Fancast soon for much more discussion on Phase 4 and beyond.
