A stroll on the banks of the River Severn

Wednesday 5th July, 2023.

Welcome to the toytown of Ironbridge, Wednesday 5th July 2023 (Author’s Collection)

With a free day and little inclination to drive any further afield than was necessary, I instead returned once more to my spiritual home of Ironbridge and home to the “Grand Old Lady” and oldest known iron bridge in the world. I had intended to walk the entire stretch of the River Severn from Coalbrookdale to Coalport, two villages and small towns as equally famous as their neighbour in Ironbridge for the parts played in the Industrial Revolution of the late 17th and early to mid 18th centuries, but after catching up with a couple of old friends I couldn’t resist the sweet smells wafting from the nearby chip shop and settled instead for fish and chips beside the river, and the pictorial stroll you are about to hopefully enjoy.

I can’t, sadly, provide you with the delicious fish and chips but I can promise you a relaxing pictorial stroll beside the River Severn and from hereon in, a mere colour commentary to the images themselves and I suggest resting those weary feet of yours, opening a packet of chocolate biscuits and indulging in this little piece of heaven on earth that when you’re within earshot of the bells of St Luke’s Church, you really won’t want to be anywhere else in the world.

I hope you enjoy.

Our pictorial stroll commences at the local rowing club which is, quixotically, not in Ironbridge itself, but in nearby Coalbrookdale.
The long ago disused “Albert Edward Bridge” and the River Severn here flowing north/north west toward the nearby market town of Shrewsbury in a handful of miles. Beneath the bridge and where the river begins to narrow was the site of the huge cooling towers of “Ironbridge Power Station”, now a long ago memory of what was once an iconic backdrop to the river.
(1) All off kilter angles as I couldn’t capture this small section of “Dale End Park”, a public park that hugs the banks of the River Severn.
From a “Viewing Platform” overlooking the river heading to Ironbridge as the river narrows up and to the right. To your left: A party of schoolchildren busy etching their drawings of the river and to your right: A fishermen standing in the river!
Two return views of the River Severn heading to the right and in the direction of Shrewsbury and the overgrown foliage surrounding the viaduct that was part of a now disused railway heading to and from Coalbrookdale — Part 1.

Forward view of the river heading to Ironbridge with the keen fisherman back in the river and St Luke’s Church just visible in the distance.
A popular area for feeding some rather hungry ducks!
Return view with a pleasure seeker joining the fisherman in the river and the hidden viaduct a strange backdrop!
A final return view at the halfway mark of this brief stroll beside the river.

Wider and higher up view of the iron bridge from beside the statue to the two World Wars that overlook this little piece of heaven on earth.
Guess which year the bridge was finally unveiled!
