5 Things I Learned from Lambda School of UX in the First Week

1. Writing is important as a designer.

I used to think that being able to design well was the most important thing about being a designer.

No. Wrong. If you can’t write, you have no voice. If you have no voice, you won’t be heard. And if you can’t be heard, you’re invisible to the community.

2. No designer stands alone.

Whether you‘re stuck on something and need help, looking for motivation, or just bored, your fellow teammates, instructors, and team leaders are there for you.

(And hopefully, you for them)

3. Remote Schooling is a mixed bag

4. You need to be organized

Organization is a skill. And a chore.

Yes, it’s boring but you need to be able to keep track of where everything is. If you don’t have a good system for organizing your files, expect to struggle.

5. You Will Learn to Trust Yourself

The projects we’ve had so far have mostly been open-ended. The parameters they give you are extremely vague. I mean it; you’re not even given a word-count requirement for writing assignments.

It’s all on purpose.

They’re really preparing you for the real world, where measures of passing, failing, A+, B- are all just vague notions. In the real world goal posts are always moving. This is the only school you attend where creativity and innovation are rewarded.
