The Power of the Poo Plant

One of the many conveniences experienced by developed countries is effective sewage management. Anyone can flush a toilet or drain a sink, and the waste is out of sight and therefore out of mind. However, there is so much work behind the scenes that people rarely take into consideration.

The water is cleaned and put back into the environment. Depending on where the water is being redistributed, the water goes through different intensity levels of “cleaning” or treatment.

If the water were being redistributed to be used in residential areas, the wastewater would go through more intensive treatment according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, and North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) standards when in North Carolina. “Receiving” areas where the water is redistributed are frequently tested to make sure that there is no negative impact on local aquatic ecosystems.
