African American Women Breast Cancer

The topic of breast cancer is frequently discussed in the community, however, there is a particular race that tends to stay away from it. Our community and even the health department do not talk much about African American breast cancer. Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage when detection is more difficult. This is one of the reasons African American women do not talk about breast cancer because most of the time, the health department discovers it too late. African American women should be evaluated using the appropriate monogram tools by the health department. A woman with a genetic predisposition to cancer should undergo more frequent screenings. As a result, we will be able to detect cancer early and provide more effective treatment.

I wanted to find out how college students felt about talking about breast cancer and what it meant to them on a social media platform. It was not surprising to see that a large number of young college students did not feel comfortable discussing breast cancer and tended to shy away from doing so. Some mentioned “Breast cancer is not talked about a lot in my family, so when people mention it, it causes me to shy away from talking about it.” Others mentioned, “I don’t know much about breast cancer and never really took the time to learn more about it.” African American breast cancer is not discussed in their family by younger generations, so when it is discussed, no one is aware of it.

In my Instagram account, I decided to do a poll asking if you feel comfortable talking about breast cancer or if you don’t feel comfortable talking about breast cancer. 90% of respondents indicated that they felt uncomfortable, while 10% stated that they did not. There is a ratio of how many African Americans are aware of breast cancer. I was amazed to see that many people did not know the side effects of the disease or that even though it is rare for African Americans to catch it, when we do we are more likely to die from it. It is important that people of all ages are aware of this information. A woman is never too young to undergo a breast cancer examination or receive a monogram. As cancer has no age, we should not place a limit on our knowledge of breast cancer based on age.

In light of further research, we cannot place all the blame on African American women. African American women are also discouraged from discussing breast cancer by the health department. Due to a lack of tools and discrimination on the part of the health department. Consequently, it is difficult for our community to learn more about breast cancer or to focus on it. As soon as the health department has been established to focusing on African American breast cancer.
